ABOUT SELINGAN TURTLE ISLAND

SELINGAN TURTLE ISLAND

The Turtle Island Park lies 40km north of Sandakan in the Sulu Sea, comprises of 3 islands – Selingan, Gulisan and Bakungan Kecil. Selingan Turtle Island houses the park’s headquarters, turtle hatchery, basic accommodation and visitor centre. This is a nesting place and foraging ground for sea turtles; most commonly Green and Hawksbill Turtle. Therefore, you might have chance to join a guided observation of sea turtle nesting process and/or new hatchlings of baby turtles released to the sea. As turtle landings usually occur at night, above the high tide mark or with a preference of mid-tide. Thus, an overnight stay would be the best plan in order to witness the amazing moment when turtle come ashore to lay their eggs.

  • The best time to visit Selingan Turtle Island is from March to July, as the sea is calmer.
  • The best time to experience green turtles laying eggs is between July and October; while Hawksbill Turtle is between February to April.

LENGTH AND THE NESTING PROCESS

The length of the time required to complete the nesting process differs among species. A Hawksbill Turtle may take 1 to 2 hours to complete nesting. For Green Turtle, it may take 2 to 3 hours. It is a slow process as the female turtles crawls to a dry part of the beach, fling away loose sand with her flippers, lay and bury their eggs for incubation before making their way back into the sea. Each time they can lay about 80 to 120 eggs, depending on the species. Freshly laid eggs will then relocated by park rangers to the hatchery site, and placed them into a man-made incubation chamber – which is around 60-75 cm deep inside the sand, to protect them from natural predators. Each nest has an information board stated the date of collection and number of eggs transplanted.

BABY TURTLE RELEASING

Incubation takes about 60 days, but since the temperature of the sand governs the speed at which the embryos develop, the hatching period can cover a broad range. Essentially, the hotter the sand surrounding the nest, the faster the embryos will develop. Cooler sand has a tendency to produce more males, with warmer sand producing a higher ratio of females. Hatchlings usually emerge from their nest after dusk when temperatures are cooler. Baby turtles will erupt from the nest cavity as a group, and transferred by park ranger to the shore. If you’re lucky, you can witness and participate in baby turtles releasing activity!

It is estimated that only 1 out of 1000 baby turtles will survive to adulthood. Hence, baby turtles have to be released soonest possible once they emerged to increase their chances of survival. The longer they are kept, the weaker they are, and thus more vulnerable to predators.
