Pick up from your hotel and transfer to Yacht Club Jetty.
12:00 pm
Board on boat for the journey to Abai, Kinabatangan. On the 1.5 hours cruise, Berhala Island, the prominent sandstone cliffs of World War II historical site, can be photographed from the boat. The boat journey continues towards the mangroves and villages of Abai. This cruise also offers the views of the different types of vegetation found along Sabah’s mighty Kinabatangan River. Photo opportunities shall vary from the usage of telephoto lenses for wildlife such as Macaques, wild Orang utan, Proboscis monkeys and the unique mudskippers, to wide-angle lens for landscape shots of Nipah palms, stilts of Rhizophora trees and mangrove forest.

Upon arrival at the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort, check-in. Lunch while your skipper conducts a briefing on the upcoming activities and advice you on recommended gears to prepare.

Afternoon refreshment of coffee, tea and local Banana Fritter ‘goreng pisang’ shall be served.

Set off for the afternoon river expedition in search of wildlife. This time in a smaller open-topped river boat, in search of wild Orang Utans, Pygmy elephants, Proboscis monkeys and other wildlife.

Heading back to the resort. At the meantime, admire the stunning river landscape as the sun sets. Dinner will be served at resort’s restaurant.

After dinner, take a walk along the boardwalks with your headlamps or torch and look for nocturnal wildlife.

Early morning cruise to observe more wildlife and birdlife. Cruise to the nearby ox-bow lake, Danau Pitas, to explore the area. Enjoy your light packed breakfast while admiring the natural surroundings.

Continue on to visit the local fishing village, Kampung Abai. Interact with local Orang sungai from river people and observe the daily activities in this tiny fishing village.

Return to the KWR Resort for breakfast.

Check out and transfer to the mainland by boat. Arrived at Sandakan Yacht Club Jetty. Transfer to your respective hotel / airport.

ABOUT LOWER KINABATANGAN RIVER
Kinabatangan River, Sabah’s longest river, flowing 560km from the mountainous interior to the Sulu Sea, is one of the most exciting and accessible places to explore the rich biodiversity of Sabah, Borneo. Along its lower reaches, where the river winds as sinuously as a snake across the flatland, it rises and spills over its bank every monsoon season to create Sabah greatest freshwater floodplain.
Lower Kinabatangan Segama Wetland is one of the most important wildlife refuges in Sabah Borneo which over the centuries has evolved 5 distinct habitats: waterlogged, dry forests, saline, freshwater swamps, and limestone forests. Each contributing towards the most diverse concentrations of wildlife in Borneo and certainly offers the most accessible wildlife viewing for the visitors. Besides, Lower Kinabatangan also recognized as an internationally important wetland for its undisturbed ecosystem where a number of rare, endangered, and threatened species live such as Proboscis Monkey, Borneo Pygmy Elephant, Bornean Sun Bear, and Rhinoceros Hornbill.
ACCOMMODATION
Kinabatangan Wetland Resort is surrounded by a secondary forest reserve. It is located within Nipah and Mangrove vegetation and is free from flood round the year. There is a 268 meters wooden walkways made from local hardwood (Belian wood) connect the jetty to reception area.
Kinabatangan Wetland Resort consists of 20 units spaciously designed deluxe chalets. All chalets are equipped with fan, private bathroom with hot & cold shower, shampoo, soap, toilet papers, 40” LED TV with selected Astro channels and air-conditioning. There is free Wifi internet access within the restaurant area. Laundry service also available at a fee. Apart from that, Kinabatangan Wetland Resort has 24 hours security personnel and 24 hours electricity supply by solar panels and a generator.
River water which undergoes water treatment and sand filtered will be supplied to the resort’s daily use. Besides, Kinabatangan Wetland Resort also practice collecting rainwater for supplements. Other than river cruises, you are free to enjoy the nature surrounding at here. Birds, monkeys such as Silvered Langur, Maroon Langur, Hose Langur, and Wild Orang Utan are regularly spotted within the area. Jungle trails via a raised boardwalk are made available for night walks and morning walks.
