CHILD RATE:
1) Child rate: Child aged 2 – 11 years old traveling with TWO (2) paying adults will enjoy a 50% discount from adult’s rate.

3) Federal Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia has imposed a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX) effective from September 2017. Sightings of animals are not guaranteed as they depend upon several factors such as moonlight, weather, temperature, and a good dose of luck!

The accommodations in Deramakot Forest Reserve are simple and basic. Do not expect any amenities like in a hotel/resort.
Do not get close to or try to contact with any wildlife animals. Keep a safe distance with them.

ITINERARY
Firstly, we will pick you up from your hotel lobby or Sandakan Airport at 10.30 am. After that, proceed to Deramakot Forest Reserve which located approximately 190km away from Sandakan city. The journey from Sandakan to Telupid is on sealed road and less bumpy. Lunch is included.
After two hours drive, have a pit stop at Telupid town. Then, continue with another two hours bumpy journey to Deramakot by four-wheel drive (4WD). Along the way, pass through four security gates, oil palm plantations, some logging areas, and secondary forest before you can finally arrive at the forest reserve. Besides that, you will also pass by some tree nurseries and forest replanting zones.
After an overall 4-5 hours drive on a paved road and gravel road, you are now entering into a truly isolated and wild forest reserve in Borneo. Upon arrival, check-in your accommodation and take some rest. Dinner will be served at the restaurant building. After that, followed by a night safari to look out for nocturnal wildlife and birds with our guide on 4WD. After approximately two hours (depending on weather and road condition) of ‘spotlighting’ and searching for wildlife, return to the lodge. Overnight at Deramakot Forest Reserve.
Early morning wake up call at 0500 hours. Onwards, depart for a pre-dawn four-wheel-drive (4WD) safari. There are many endemic wildlife that can be found here in Deramakot Forest Reserve. After that, return to the lodge for breakfast. After breakfast, you can go on a jungle walk (optional) or simply spend your day relax in the middle of the jungle in Borneo. Many bird species can be spotted from your Deramakot accommodation. Lunch and free at own leisure.
Depart for a dusk wildlife safari in the evening. Return to the lodge at 1800hrs for your dinner. After dinner, continue with another night safari in search of more nocturnal wildlife. Overnight at Deramakot Forest Reserve.
Early morning wake up call at 0500 hours. Onwards, depart for an early morning drive in search of more wildlife. Enjoy the soothing morning breeze with relaxing sound of singing birds in the forest reserve. Then, return to the lodge for breakfast. After breakfast, free at your own leisure. Lunch will be served at the lodge.
In the evening, depart for a dusk wildlife safari. Return to the lodge at 1800hrs for your dinner. After dinner, continue with another night safari in search of more nocturnal wildlife. Overnight at Deramakot Forest Reserve.
Wake up and go for an early morning walk. This is the last chance to look for the many wild animals that live in the Borneo rainforest. Return to the lodge and have breakfast. After breakfast, check out, drive back to Sandakan.
WHAT TO DO IN DERAMAKOT?
Birdwatching:
With its wide variety of bird species, Deramakot Forest Reserve is an excellent birdwatching destination in Sabah, Borneo. Species such as the Great Argus Pheasant, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Speckled Piculet, Thick-bellied Flowerpecker, Rhinocerous Hornbill, Bornean Bristlehead and many more are found here. Be amazed by the sheer diversity of beautiful and exotic birds, take pictures and learn about these enviable creatures. A high-powered telescope and a Borneo’s bird guide book is a must!
Birdwatching Key Tips:
Jungle Trekking:
Jungle trekking is generally a very thrilling and adventurous experience, also the greatest way to get close to nature. Not far from Deramakot resthouse there is a jungle trekking trail that leads you through a secondary regenerative forest. There are trees and plant species identification signs label features along the trail. It is an easy trail, so just take your time to explore the lush green Borneo rainforest and with the mystery that surrounds the jungles!
Dawn and Dusk Safari:
Dawn and dusk tend to be the most active time for mammals and birds, when there’s some light but the sun has lost most of its heat. Embark upon a dawn and dusk safari at Deramakot to look for globally and locally threatened Borneo mammal species, such as Orangutans, Bantengs, Asian Elephants, and Sunda Clouded Leopards while enjoying cool and refreshing air in the misty forest.
Night Safari:
Hop onto the back of a pick-up truck for a night safari tour. Guides use powerful torch lights to sweep the pitch-black night landscape in search of nocturnal animals such as Civets, Leopard Cats, Flying Squirrels, Sleeping Birds, and owls. The slow drive along the road is an opportunity to see the wild animals and also to enjoy the beautiful night sky studded with stars you hardly see in the city skyline. Bring a light sweater or jacket as it gets chilly at night. In the unlikely event that you don’t spot even one animal, the drive itself is a pleasant experience to enjoy the cool surroundings and the occasional calls of the wild.
ABOUT DERAMAKOT FOREST RESERVE
Deramakot Forest Reserve lies north of the Kinabatangan River, is a hidden gem located in the heart of Sabah, spans an area 55,507 hectares of Mixed Dipterocarp Forest. Deramakot earned the first Tropical Rainforest in the world to be certified as “well managed” forest in Sabah by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in September 1997. Consequently, Deramakot is in its 5th certification period which expires in October 2019, making it the longest certified tropical rainforest in the world. (click here to view)
Deramakot Forest Reserve is one of Sabah’s BEST wildlife-watching destinations. It has been documented that about 75% of mammals in Sabah can be found within this forest reserve includes the five globally threatened large mammals, namely Orangutan, Bornean Pygmy Elephant, Tembadau (Banteng), Proboscis Monkey and Clouded Leopard. Apart from that, other wildlife such as the Bornean Gibbon, Flying Squirrel, Mouse-Deer, Civets, Binturong, Flying Lemur, Wild Boar and so on can be seen as well. But, you may need some luck as wildlife sighting is not guaranteed, especially the wildlife here is not used to human presence.
Besides that, Deramakot Forest Reserve is also an excellent bird-watching site. There are a lot of species that can be found here. For example, you may spot Buff-necked Woodpecker, all 8 species of Hornbill especially Helmeted Hornbill and Wreathed Hornbill, Changeable Hawk-eagle, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Blue-eared Kingfisher, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Bornean Bristlehead and so on. So, please get your lens ready!

ACCOMMODATION
Deramakot Forest Reserve offers two types of accommodation for visitors – chalet (4 units) and bunk bed hostel (1 unit only). There are three bedrooms in each chalet, with attached bathroom. Overnight stay in Deramakot will be assigned as a room based on run-of-house basis and all types of accommodation nestled within the forest reserve. Hence, you can appreciate the beautiful sights and sounds of the jungle all day.
Kindly take note that the accommodation in Deramakot is not a resort or hotel, do not expect an urban luxury since its meant for wild explorers/ nature lovers. There is no service attendant, no daily housekeeping, and they do not provide any laundry service. Apart from that, the room is basic and not tourist-oriented, but it is clean, comfortable, air-conditioned, come with ceiling fans and hot shower facilities.
There is a living room, a very basic kitchen area and bedrooms in every chalet. Pillow, mattress, blanket, towel, body shampoo, hair shampoo, and toilet roll are provided. Hairdryer and iron are not available. Besides, there is also no restaurant, grocery shop, or convenience store in the forest reserve.
As you are now in the middle of the jungle, there is no signal and network coverage in Deramakot Forest Reserve as well. But the good thing is they do provides 24 hours electricity and water supply to visitors. Lastly, remember to close all doors and windows at night as bugs are attracted to light!
