ITINERARY
Pick up from your hotel lobby in Kota Kinabalu city at 0730hrs. Take approximately 3 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu city to The Tip of Borneo. Enroute to the tip, the road cuts across the scenic Tempasuk plain before climbing a low range of hills, where local stalls selling a range of basket ware, rough-hewn chopping boards, fruits, grilled sweet corn, as well as locally grown peanuts. We will make a brief stop at here for you to have a taste on it. The grilled sweet corn or “Jagung Bakar” is a one of the “must try” item; unlike the steam corn, grilled corn are crunchier and taste better.
Proceed to The Tip of Borneo, also known as “Tanjung Simpang Mengayau” – means ‘lingering junction’ where the South China Sea and Sulu Sea meet in a dramatic clash of waves. Upon arrival, there is a way leads you up to the headland, which is dominated by a huge flagpole. Mile long pristine beaches wraps its coastline, with clear blue azure water pulling you in as it laps the shore. Swirling patterns have been etched into the soft stone of the headland by prolonged wind and wave erosion. As the nature has carved steps into the rocks, making it possible to clamber down to the flat rocky shelves surrounded by sea. Take beautiful photo here, as many as possible before we proceed to lunch.
The next stop will be Maranjak Longhouse, which is wholly made out of traditional materials such as split bamboos for walls and nipah palm leaves for roofing. You will be able to identify a way of life and traditional culture of old Rungus here. It is possible to see the Rungus women sitting on the bamboo made floor, busy on their beadwork. Various type of colorful beadwork is one of the most popular souvenirs tourists bring home. Lunch will be served here (the local’s traditional style lunch).
After lunch, depart to Kampung Sumangkap Gong Factory. “Gong” is the most important musical instrument for Rungus people, they played “Gong” during special occasions or important festivals celebration. Grab this opportunities to witness the method of gong making by the professional gong makers in the village. You may also buy the tiny one as a souvenir for friends! Before heading back to Kota Kinabalu, visit to Gombizau Honey Bee Farm which located not far from the Gong village. While observing how a bee farm is managed, remember to get a taste of raw honey straight from the honeycomb! Tasting raw honey is something worthwhile and the taste of raw honey is different from the one in honey jar. There is a stall selling different types of local honey nearby, just stop by if you wish to buy some.
